Fighter Jet vs. Tanker

The equipment decision that separates profitable wellsite operations from expensive mistakes.

Turbine threshold for consideration
5 MW
Below 5 MW with variable gas quality, generators win every time. Above 5 MW with a guaranteed, clean, high-pressure supply — turbines earn consideration.

When it comes to converting natural gas into Bitcoin, the equipment you generate power with matters as much as the gas itself. Two technologies dominate the conversation — reciprocating generators and gas turbines. They are not equals, and in most wild mining deployments, the choice is clear.

Why Generators Win at the Wellsite

Reciprocating natural gas generators are purpose-built for the conditions wild mining demands. They handle variable gas quality, low BTU content, and inconsistent flow rates without complaint. They start fast, scale modularly, and can be right-sized to match the available gas stream — whether that's 400 kW or 2 MW.

Maintenance is straightforward, parts are widely available, and service can be performed by field technicians without specialized equipment. Capital cost is significantly lower than turbines at equivalent power output, and the break-even timeline reflects it.

"For stranded and flare gas deployments where gas quality varies and budgets are real, generators are the practical, proven choice."

Size Matters

Undersized generators are one of the most common and costly mistakes in mining deployments. A single ASIC miner draws between 3,000W and 10,000W+ depending on the model. A 40-foot container with modern hardware can require 300 kW to 2 MW+. The standard practice: size your generator 20–30% above your calculated peak load. Running a generator at or near maximum capacity continuously degrades engine performance, increases fuel consumption, and shortens operational life significantly.

Maintenance Is Your Uptime Insurance

Natural gas generators require spark plug replacements, carburetor rebuilds, and regular service cycles at 250–500 hour intervals. Diesel generators have fewer frequent service requirements but need consistent oil changes, filter replacements, and fuel system inspections. Remote monitoring systems that track generator health in real-time are not a luxury — they're how you catch a developing failure before it becomes an unplanned shutdown that costs you days.

Load Management Is a Discipline

Running your generator at maximum capacity isn't just a maintenance problem — it's an efficiency problem. Sudden shock loads from starting multiple miners simultaneously can stress electrical systems and shorten generator life. Implement staged startup procedures, balance load across multiple generators where possible, and build operational protocols around ramp-up/ramp-down discipline. The mines that run most profitably are the ones with the most boring, consistent power management routines.

Where Turbines Make Sense

Gas turbines earn their place at scale. At sustained outputs above 5 MW with a consistent, clean, high-pressure gas supply, turbines deliver superior fuel efficiency and lower emissions per megawatt. Large geothermal facilities, established midstream operations, and utility-scale power generation projects are where turbine economics make sense.

The capital cost, installation complexity, and specialized maintenance requirements are justified when the energy source is stable, abundant, and long-term. Most wild mining operators will never need to make that decision. Start with the right tool for the job.

Generator vs. Turbine — Decision Framework
  • Variable gas quality or low BTU content → Generator
  • Site size under 5 MW → Generator
  • Speed to hashrate priority → Generator
  • Field technician service environment → Generator
  • Sustained output above 5 MW → Turbine earns consideration
  • Guaranteed clean, high-pressure gas supply → Turbine earns consideration
  • Decade-long horizon with utility-scale ambitions → Turbine earns consideration
